How to Programme A BK Controller - Mike Cronin
I have fielded several phone calls and tons of e-mails seeking clarification of the BK controller instruction manual. Specifically, the initial set up programming has been a popular topic. I decided it was best to post instructions here, in plain English for everyone that needs the information, as well as some general rules to help users get the most from their system. Here goes:
General Rules: Brushless systems offer high power and efficiency. There are a few general rules I would like to discuss that apply to all users of brushless systems.
Wire Length: For the most reliable, efficient sytem, it is imperative that all wires on the system be as short as possible. This includes wires from the battery to the controller as well as wires from the motor to the controller. Longer wire not only reduces efficiency, it increases resistance and can lead to high voltage spikes, which may damage the controller! It is also a good idea to twist battery leads together and motor leads together to reduce the possibility of radio interference.
Connectors: These systems can draw some power when under full power and it is Highly recommended that only a high quality battery connector be used. Dean's connectors are among the most popular and highest quality for this application.
Solder connections: This is a highly important area. A bad solder joint will have a serious effect on the performance of the system. Please take precautions to ensure that all solder joints are clean and properly connected and covered (heat shrink). This includes the batteries themselves, as well as all connections between the motor, controller and batteries.
General installation: The motor has three wires, which can be connected to the three controller wires in any sequence. The motor and controller must be properly connected and should be installed on the vehicle before we begin the initial programming procedure. It is also recommended that you run a receiver pack or UBEC anytime you are running more than 10 cells or less than 8cells (pretty much always use a receiver pack or UBEC for the best performance).
If you intend to run 2 packs in series (most Maxx or buggy conversions will run this configuration), wire the battery leads as follows: Connect the red(positive) battery lead from the speed control to the positive side of your male connector (Dean's connectors highly recommended). Then, connect the black (negative) battery lead from the controller to the negative side of ANOTHER male connector. Finally, connect the two male connectors to each other (should be positive on one to negative on the other). You should have a triangle-like configuration on your speed control. Now, when you plug in both battery packs, they will automatically be wired in series. Now, on to the setup.
Now that we have the controller wired and the motor and controller installed, we may begin the initial programming sequence.
First, turn on your transmitter.
Next, remove the red programming bridge (little red jumper near the battery leads). While you are there, you should also remove the black BEC jumper if you are using a receiver pack or UBEC as recommended. This black tab is near the red jumper, but tucked under the heatshrink. Remove this to disable the BEC and utilize the receiver pack/UBEC.
Now plug in the receiver pack/UBEC and the main batteries and wait. After 5 seconds, you will here a beep from the motor. When you here this beep, move the throttle to full power and wait. after another 5 seconds, you will here another beep. When you here this, move your throttle control to full reverse and wait. After 5 seconds, you will here a double beep, indicating that set up is complete. Now replace the red programming jumper and turn off/unplug your main batteries and receiver pack.
Congratulations, you have just programmed your controller for Forwad/Brakes/Reverse operation and it will operate similar to a regular reversible speed controller. The controller can be set up as a forward/brakes controller, as well. This is done by returning the throttle position to neutral (instead of full reverse)before the final set of beeps (double beeps). For forward only operation, keep the throttle at full throttle (instead of neutral or reverse) before the final set of beeps. This is useful for setups using mechanical brakes.
Now, if the motor goes backwards when you want it to go forward, we can quickly fix that as well. Here goes:
Turn on your radio, plug in the main batteries and receiver battery(or UBEC). While the system is on, remove the red jumper. When you here a beep, put the red jumper back on the controller. That is it! You just reversed the motor direction!
Now go out and beat up on some nitro vehicles and enjoy your system!

12 Simplified steps to programming your MGM using only your transmitter - Shaun
1. Pour yourself a drink, :wink: (I find that good bottle of wine or a tall cold screwdriver work real well) find some good music (Rock, jazz or blues – absolutely NO RAP or Country music aloud) and get ready to have some fun..
2. Not to sound like your “dad” :whistle: on this step but you really should remove your pinion gear before you get started, it just makes life easer and puts the thought of it tacking off out of your mind, remember your drinking, so simplify life tasks..
3. Going into “programming mood” :mdr:
4. first pickup your transmitter with the throttle position in max throttle and turn it on.
5. now turn on your RX and wait for the for three beeps and or the LED light blinks 3 times (either or), once it blinks 3 times “quickly move the throttle to full brake (you have 3 sec) once it’s on in full brake it will blink 1 time, then move the throttle to nutural and the ESC should blink 2 times!. If you come this far you are now is Programming mode and you’ve earned the rite to “top off your drink” and should continue with these helpful simplified instructions. If you have not achieved programming mode, then go back to step 2 and try it again, it is not recommended that you top off your drink at this point.. (put down your transmitter until step nine! but do not turn it off!)
6. This next task is best explained if you have your MGM instructions with you for “parameter Programming / programming table” if not :no: you can get a copy here - http://mgm-compro.com/manuals/en-manual-tmm-xxxx-3-car-boat-expert+v320-d270308.pdf
7. now that you’ve got the document in front of you, it time to decide what / how you are going to program your ESC, review the doc and circle on the page your printed out of the programming table your choices. Once you have completed that task you should know that you are already in programming mode (stay with me here!) so now you need to set your first parameter (A) and your first Value (1, 3 or 5) Values 2 & 4 are for boats and will not apply to this task. (still with me) ?? Your First Parameter is “mode choice” your values are forward and backward (1), forward only (3) and Automatic (5). I run value 1 <=I=> car mode forward / backward
8. before we move own you need to know the proper steps in setting your value in each parameter you are setting, :oh: this step applies to each and every parameter and value you will need to set up so learn it!, memorize it and then top off your totty! and light them if you got um because your going to be the master of your own domain. (sorry Seinfeld moment).. :oops:
9. Programming Values into your parameters only! :yes:
Move the throttle to full throttle position, the ESC will blink once or the motor will beep once, now move the throttle to neutral position and the LED light on the esc will blink 2 times, you have now set your first parameter A as Value (1) Car mode forward and backwards. If you want to set your parameter A as value 3 (forward only) then simple perform the full throttle back to neutral, 3 successful times of full throttle (1 beep or blink) and neutral (2 blinks)
10. Once you have set your values within your parameter you will need to finish by performing the following before moving to your next parameter, B (brake). :gasp:
11. Move the throttle to full brake position and the motor and ESC should it blinks or beeps (3) times, then go back to neutral position and the motor and ESC should it blinks or beeps (2) times. If so, congratulations!!! You’ve got it!.. have another drink and make it a double because you’ve earned it!.. if not (??) well then go back and try it again.. You have now successfully completed your first parameter and value and now you move on two parameter B with values of 1, 3 & 5. :yipi:
12. Now move on to your second parameter “B” Braking and so on and so on until your have completed all of the parameter A-J and there applicable values of 1, 3 & 5.
That it... Simple haa..

Remember you can always remove all programming from the ESC and start from scratch by simply turning everything off, then turn on your transmitter with the throttle on full throttle and then turn on your RX, let the ESC / motor beep 3 times (continue to hold it) and then it will beep or blink 4 times, now move the throttle to the full brake position in 3 sec and the motor / ESC led will blink / beep and then shut it all down and simply start @ step two again..
There is a great example of programming by transmitter for 14 steps on page 11 of 12 here. But I feel that my explanation gives it a more personnel touch. Hhaaa..
Once you understand the how to’s it should take you all of 10 minutes to program your MGM controller Via your transmitter.
