Losi 8 mount and a 1717 - 01.28.2011, 10:22 AM

Will the losi 8 mount work with a 1717 finned CC/Neu motor?

If not, is there a mount that will work in this application?

I have both the 8 buggy and 8 truck, and I'd like to run a 1518 on 8S in the buggy, and the 1717 on 6S in the truck.

Thanks for the answers in advance. (really itching to buy some stuff from Mike to support the forum).

If I could only draw what I see in my head, then afford to build it, and finaly get to play with it...

Pretty sure the 1518, or any cc 15 series motor will fit just fine. I highly doubt that the 1717 will fit any of Mikes mounts, save for the old crt mount as it was quite tall to fit the ferris wheel sized spur gear. You can shim any of the mounts taller, of course. So any mount will fit any size motor, if you make stuff.

You may also want to look into your gearing options with the 1717 as the diameter of the motor will limit the size of pinions and spurs, as the motor will hit the center diff rear output if you try to use a smaller pinion. Just a thought as you will be running higher motor speeds with 6 and 8s lipo. And you plan to run on a track, so 70mph is not really good gearing!

I have one of Mike's (RCM) old style Losi Mounts (2 slot, non pivoting) and it is exactly 25mm from the bottom of the mount to the center of the motor. The 1717 is listed as 49.5mm, so you'll have to raise the CD up for the motor to clear the chassis. I do know that Mike's mount already raises the CD up 4mm from the stock nitro height bringing the front center shaft very close to the radiobox/servo mount. I had to trim mine slightly. IDK if raising it any further will cause more issues with this or put the shafts at bad angles, I don't have a buggy or truggy here, just the mount. BTW my mount is for sale along with the radio box/servo mount, pm within.

Linc, good to know the 1518s not an issue, aside from gearing options (going to go as small as I can without clearance issues).
Feeling a little stupid not having considered shimming it up LOL.

OD, I've got the CC mount in the buggy right now and it's 28mm above the chassis to the center of the motor, so it clears there.
The issue with it is that the motor mounting flat is recessed into the face of the mount so it would take some milling back to work with the 1717.

I do have the RCM universal diff/motor mount, I think if I recess the two screws below the motor that hold the mount together I could use it with the 1717.
It puts the motor over the driveshaft as opposed to next to it, I'll just have to drill new holes in the chassis...

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question guys :-)

1717 on Mike's mount - 01.30.2012, 11:56 AM

Can the 1717 Castle motor work with mikes motor mount?. If so, what mods must be done to accept it, on a losi 8 tyruggy?, thanks in advance...

Mikes mounts fit a 1717 just fine. Running 1717 on my Converted D8T with mikes kit. Motor sits maybe 1-2mm from chassis. Perfect IMO.

No way would a 30t fit on the new style mount. With a 44t Spur I think the Max would be 25-26t pinion. This is comparing my D8T mount, but its the same situation.

Mine is maxed out at 19/50 with a 36.5mm gap, So that is equal to 25/44

So what are the speed guys supposed to do, does that Universal mount thing work, and what cars does it work with. Will a 30t pinion fir with a 40 spur in the new mount?, thanks.....

Well using a 40t Spur, 30/40 the gap is only 37mm vs the 36.5mm I have on my truggy. I think 30/40 should work just fine. I mean .5mm is easily shaved off the mount if need be...

See here for the calculations:

My concern is also that single screw, is it enough to hold like a 1717? or another big type motor. The old one just felt more secure for the motor in my opinion. and more gearing also..Hope mike gives me an answer..

The single screw on top is for easy adjustment. The bottom is a captured bushing. Strength and motor security will NOT be an issue. With a 40t spur, the largest pinion will be a 27t or 28t with the current Losi mount.

Mike would it be possible to request this new mount with the hole positions drilled further out, maybe have high speed version of this mount??
