208 Software for RX8 - 09.30.2010, 11:59 PM

What is the new "208" timing area all about in the software? I am having a hard time figuring out what to do.

My setup as is:
RCM XT8 2009 spec
RX8 with 1550kv truggy motor
5s 4200mah Hyperion 35c
14/46 gearing

Prior to the update I was running 17 degree timing and that worked well.

I need to be able to run 15 min. What is a good starting point?

This is what I was afraid of - no one knows. I didnít see a lot of documentation for the RX8 and the new features online. Tekin, are you there?

Hi Mike! How does the timing boost work? I dont understand the ending RPM. Is that the total motor RPM that it will allow? Do you still have this setup in your xt8? Would it be possible to see your settings?

if it is same is in onroad ESCs like RS pro than timing boost will increase timing after some time on full throttle to further increase top speed at straights. It is usefull if straights are very long (like 2+seconds) so after like 1 second ESC will increase timing of the motor increasing its RPMs (and of course heat)

Ok, starting to make sense. What should I put for the start RPM, end RPM, and timing for a 1550kv motor?

RX8 Dual Mode Boost Settings
Tekin T8 motors are 4-pole, 12-slot motors with very low turns that need very little timing at
higher RPM. The maximum timing in Dual Mode is 30deg, displayed in the HotWire as Timing
Advance, with a range of 0% to 100%. The T8 motors are only able to efficiently use about 30% to
50% Timing Advance (10 to 15deg). Settings higher than 50% on Timing Advance is appropriate
for standard 1/10 scale motors, for Tekin's SC4x SCT motors, and for the long-can motors that some
sell as 1/8 scale motors.
While Timing Advance in a 1/10 scale motor can more than double the kV of a motor, the
T8 motors only increase kV around 10%, after which the extra energy is wasted in the form of heat.
Run times decrease when too much timing is applied.
The user can select from 5 preset Timing Profiles on the RS, RSpro and RX8 without a HotWire:
TP1 10% Dual Mode Timing Advance,
TP2 27% Dual Mode Timing Advance,
TP3 45% Dual Mode Timing Advance,
TP4 63% Dual Mode Timing Advance,
TP5 80% Dual Mode Timing Advance
C1 Custom settings using Hotwire
C2 Custom settings using Hotwire
Custom 1 and Custom 2 (C1 and C2) are user-savable Timing Profiles created in the HotWire
and selected via the RX8's on-board interface. This will allow the user to have specific Timing
Advance values or different RPM ranges, that are then available on the unit with just a few button
pushes.

Thanks for posting the information. The problem that I have is the custom profiles. By default, when you update the RX8 it comes in as a custom profile. I havent seen anything on the tekin website about the start/end rpm for the RX8 only the RS. I think that I might monkey around with the presets so I don't jack up my equipment.

I think a good start point for the 1550 motor on 5s would be around 50% timing advance coming in(start rpm) at perhaps 22k rpms and ending at 27k or so rpms. This should ramp into the timing advance at around 3/4 of full speed and max out the advance(15 degrees at 50% advance) as you approach what would be top speed without the advance. This is just a baseline start point and may vary on your particular track. Ideally, you only want the timing to advance on the long straight when you may otherwise "run out of legs". This allows you to gear lower for optimum low speed driving and efficiency on the main portion of the track, while also squeezing extra speed on the straight. :)

I installed this firmware during the week and gave it a first try this morning (RX8\T8). I was a bit confused about the timing as well. The documentation is ok but could be better.

Braking strength has definitely improved. Seems on par now with the Castle MM. I used the first preset for timing (10% ?) which i think is at least the same amount as i had set on the previous firmware (Timing Advance = 10). Top speed seemed a little slower but throttle response felt more linear which was nice. Motor\ESC Temps were in the same range as before

Forgot to mention yesterday. The delay time when running the fwd\delay\reverse mode seemed shorter. Now feels like its close to the MM, before it was a bit too long.
