Which pinion for my buggy? (conversion) - 12.27.2009, 02:44 PM

Hi,

I want to convert my old buggy to electro. I'm buying a MMM 2200kv set and some 4S 5000mah lipo's.
I don't know what the diff ratio is of my buggy. I can't find it anywhere in the specs. But I guess it's between 3-3.3 (rather around 3.1-3.2 I guess)when I turn the wheels and look at the diff. I guess that the pinion that comes with the MMM set will be too big (18T) Could anyone help me? My diff is 52T and my nitro engine was 14T is guess.

This is what I become with the 18T pinion.
Code:
Differential Ratio: 3.15
Transmission Ratio: 1
Other Ratio: 1
Spur Tooth Count: 52
Pinion Tooth Count: 18
Total Voltage: 14.8
Motor KV: 2200
Tire Diameter (inches): 4.2
Tire Ballooning (inches): 0.1
Motor Current Draw: 100
Motor Coil Resistance: 0.006
Spur/Pinion Ratio: 2.89 : 1
Total Ratio: 9.1 : 1
Tire Circumference (inches): 13.82 inches (351.1 mm)
Rollout: 1.52:1
Total Motor Speed: 31240 RPM
Vehicle Speed: 44.94 mph (72.18 km/h)
Effective KV Value: 2110.81
KT constant: 0.61 oz-in/A
Motor Torque: 0.32 ft-lbs
Final Torque: 2.91 ft-lbs
Final Power: 1480 watts (2 HP)

What kind of buggy do you have? I'm sure someone around here knows the diff ratio.

It's generally accepted to gear between 30-40mph when testing a new setup. Always better to start conservatively, and speed up from there if your temps are staying within safe ranges. Having to spend another $10 on the next larger larger pinion is much less of a headache than sending in a fried ESC for warranty or having to buy a new one!

I hava a Protech phaser 4 RS. It's a pretty old one that I bought 6.5years ago. I haven't driven the buggy for 5 years. Now I wanna start again, but with a brushless setup. I'm tired of nitro :p

The thing is, there are no RC shops around here. Just 1 for planes. I was looking at HK but they only 13T, 17T and bigger pinions, I will get my lipo's from HK. My nitro engine had a 14T pinion on it.

From your set up above, I'd go for 15-17tooth pinions. You can get all your pinions here in the RCMstore

1. MBX-6 T8 1900KV, RX8 ON 4S
2. MBX-5T 1520, MMM ON 5S
3. MBX-5 ONROAD CONVERSION 1515, MMM ON 5S
4. MRX-3 ON ROAD CONVERSION 1512, MMM ON 6S
5. TEN T 2650 T8, MMP ON 3S

Also the 18t pinion that comes with the combo is a 32pitch pinion for the E-Maxx and E-Revo MTs. 1/8 buggies, truggies, and the Savage flux all use Mod1 pinions. Your best bet for pinions are right here in the RC-Monster store! I would probablly start with a 15tooth and see how that performs for you and if all electronics are cool and your not happy with the speed try a 16 or 17 tooth.

RC-Monster RC8T 1515 2.5D/MMM/5s RC-M 4500mah
SC10 MMPro 13.5T 2s NeuEnery 5000mah
RC18T Mamba 25/5400kv 2s lipo + 6s NiMh

I'd like to buy them here because of the nice price, but the shipping cost is 26$ to Belgium for 2 pinions :s
