Anyone else in Japan/Hawaii, be careful you guys...it's hell outside right now. Half-mile long backups everywhere for gas and emergency supplies...if it doesn't sound that impressive, consider that Hilo has a population of only 50,000.

My wife's family seems to be in a safe area so I am happy about that but it sounds like there will be a high death toll from this. I heard people have been washed away. I am sad to hear this and hope the casualties are at a minimum but from the seens on the tv it looks very serious.

Jerry, I'm doing okay here on the ship. I have duty today so I can't go home. So far, nothing was damage on base but it was pretty scary. The quake lasted almost a minute long and there were plenty of aftershocks. The tsunami was only about 6 feet on base but the northern part of Japan wasn't as lucky. They were inundated with 23-foot waves and I could just watch in amazement how fishing boat, trucks, cars and houses were swept by the waves. My family is doing okay but they were scared and shaken bad. It sucks because I can't go home and console them especially the kids. It doesn't help either living in the 8th floor of a high rise tower. Were about 41 miles southeast of Tokyo.

Thanks for the concern. Now, it time fior me to go on a 4-hour Officer of the Deck watch. I can't wait until I get home tomorrow.

Good to hear. - 03.11.2011, 02:18 PM

It is good to hear that you and your family are OK Lito. Duty comes first, and I know that well Chief. I was lucky enough to never get to stand an Officer of the Deck watch in over 20 years. Once I made E-6 I stood duty Chief and once I made Chief I was Engineering Officer of the day for my duties. At least you can go home in the morning after your section is relieved to give everyone a big hug. We still do not have any TV system hooked up here, so I have not seen any news in over a week. We should be able to get our hands on an AFN receiver in a week or two, so we can at least get to watch Fox News, BBC, and CNN. I hate being out of touch with whats going on in the world. Glad to hear your OK Chief.

On line news - 03.13.2011, 02:57 PM

Well from all of the on line news that we have read through so far it does not look good. One reactor has already had some leakage, but so far it was minimal. The reactor is normally cooled by purified/distilled water in a closed system which is very well controlled, but after some damage they have had to revert to using seawater pumped from the near by ocean as an emergency cooling medium. As long as they can keep the water flowing and the rods covered things are good to go, but if cooling fails all together there would be a meltdown, and more than likely a pretty big explosion. It could end up much like the disaster in Chernobyl, Russia, which resulted in an area of about 30-40 square miles being a barron waste land. Everything within that circle will die and be contaminated for approx 100 years or more.

This is a very serious matter. The scariest thing is that a ploom of nuclear radiation could leak into the atmosphere and travel hundreds of miles or more poisoning everything in its path. If two reactors end up this way simotaniously within the same region it could be comepletely disasterous for the entire island of Japan and its nearby neighbors. We should all be saying some kind of prayers for everyone affected by this situation. It is quickly becoming an internation responsibility to resolve whatever problems there are looming from this very large Earthquake and Tsunami. The people of Japan will need help on every level to get out of this mess. The French who from what I am reading set these reactors up in Japan are already ordering all of their people out of Japan for their own safety.

I believe in our worlds nuclear specialists in that they can contain these reactors.but all they need is one slip up and a 100 hundred square mile radioactive plume flies over japan and California, like the world economy could withstand one of the largest tech producers and one of the biggest breadbaskets in the world collapsing.

I also just read that Japan has declared states of disaster in six of its nuke plants as of about an hour ago. The official death toll now stands at about 1400. I am sure with the level of devistation it will take weeks for their efforts to reach final numbers and figure out exactly what level of damage has been done. The estimates I just saw may equal somewhere near $65billion in just insured damages.

Todays news reports - 03.14.2011, 02:10 AM

We finally saw some of the news videos that show entire towns being washed out to sea. It is devistating just to think of what these poor people had to endure. The news said that yesterday off one of the towns worst hit they found over 1000 bodies along the seashore. There is a report of a second explosion at one of the Nuke plants, but that the radiation levels were within exceptable limits so there was no danger of major leakage. The videos are just painful to watch.

This might help with the reactor understanding?
