gearing help - 07.11.2008, 01:23 AM

i tired a search but that didnt help me much. i also tried BrianG's page but didnt really answer my question..

im in the process of finishing my revo and all i need is a mod1 pinion, but what size.

i have a MM, 9XL, 38t spur, and 12 cells (later upgraded to a 4s lipo). i also have the wide ratio and CD in the tranny.

what wold be a smooth, fast, cool running pinion. im thinking some where in the neighborhood of 19 tooth?

you might want to try a smaller pinion 16 or 17 tooth, I have the wide ratio tranny gears, 38 tooth spur and a 18 tooth pinion and its geared for over 50mph, I am running a Neu 2.5d on 6s which runs cooler than your setup

I run a 9xl on 4s and 5s with 14 and 18 tooth pinions. Today I ran 5s with 18/38 and hit 50mph! I normally just use the 14t, it keeps everything cooler and I get better run times, 18 is just for speed runs.

I bought 36t spur and 17t pinion for my 9xl on 4s, it should go 38mph. But I haven't run it yet because Castle stole my ESC. Hasn't been run in 7 months, except for a few tests with the CMS-4600 48mm motor.

The timmy - Revo 3.3 MM 9XL 4s , Rustler MM 4600 3s
The ferty - Dual velineon Revo 3s, Rustler velineon 3s

19 is a great place to start at, review your temps every 5 minutes and adjust accordingly to your liking and heating temps. I've had great success with a 49 and 20 and I’m currently running 52/22 on 6s, but all of these have been on a Neu so I'm not sure how it works with your motor..

For what it's worth 17t just feel rite (as stupid as it sounds).. let me / us know what worked..

Nothing!.. Hahahahaaa..

i went with the 17t pinion and 38t spur, topend seems a little slugish but that could be because of the B&T 2400 batter packs. they arent made for the amp draw this motor has, so they get hot quick

everything else hovers around 100, so im pleased.

Good batteries make a big difference. 17/38 should not be sluggish at all. You might want to go down to a 14 pinion and a 40 spur until you get some batts that can handle the amp draw.

BrianG, your old revo is running awesome!

That's good to hear. Sometimes I regret selling it because it was pretty bulletproof and was really fun. But, I had to make room in the stable.

Yeah, it was either keep it and totally re-work it, or sell it and start on a whole 'nother project. The new project won (obviously). I really like working on these things more than running them (although that's fun too).
